Yellow Wheat with Cypresses has been one of Van Gogh's most reproduced paintings. It is the last in a series of cypress landscapes that Vincent van Gogh finished in 1889

Van Gogh wrote to Theo that cypresses were "as beautiful ... as an Egyptian obelisk ... a splash of black in a sunny landscape." In Provence, the cypress was a symbol of death, but it seems from Van Gogh's writing that he regarded them as pillars of strength in an almost chaotic landscape.

In the clouds, Van Gogh's thickly applied paint gives the suggestion that clouds can be as solid as mountains.

In Yellow Wheat with Cypresses, the dark flaming cypress dominates the painting—stronger than the sky, the mountain and the land.

The wheat field is a rolling sea of gold with brushstrokes curling as they express the force of the wind and the struggle of the wheat to stand. Van Gogh has painted hundreds of strokes mixing yellow, ochre, sienna and white.
