In 1890, Vincent van Gogh entered the asylum at Saint-Rémy, a beautiful town filled with gorgeous gardens, flowers and magnificent old trees. The colors Van Gogh found in Saint-Rémy gave him a new palette: from the heat of sun-baked Arles he moved to cooler blues, greens and violets. Van Gogh moved from sunflowers to irises.

Vincent van Gogh intended the composition of Irises to be a close view of nature. The leaves of the irises are clearly outlined and undulate across the canvas. The spikes of grass are echoed in the spiky brushstrokes of the earth.

All of the energetic lines radiate from the dramatic center of the irises themselves.
