Fritillaria in a Vase of Copper was painted in Paris in 1887. He gave this piece an unusual background that was somewhat pointillist. In his later portraits, including his self-portraits, Van Gogh used the background as an expression of the nature of the central focus of the painting.
During his time in Paris, Van Gogh absorbed much of what the Impressionists had to offer. He became aware of light and its display.

Imperial Crown Fritillaria in a Copper Vase
The vase in Imperial Crown Fritillaria in a Vase of Copper shows some Impressionist influences, although the characteristic drawing-like brushstrokes are pure Van Gogh.
