On canvas Van Gogh deliberately ignored the classical rules of linear perspective. For Van Gogh, lines were not a means to imitate physical space but were instead a way to allow him to impose his inner vision on the outside world. This deliberate distorting of the natural world in order to express an inner emotion is one of the hallmarks of Expressionism which would emerge in 1911, long after Vincent's death. Van Gogh's art is considered to be a vanguard of Expressionism. Press CTRL-D to bookmark this page. |
